Four county runners win races at EOSSAA cross-country

Posted: October 25th, 2013 @ 12:18am

Four teams and 12 other individuals from Kingston-area high schools are on their way to the provincial scholastic cross-country championships after their performances Thursday at the annual Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association meet at Brockville's Memorial Park.

The top two teams in each age group and the top five individual runners not on those teams earned a trip to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Saturday, Nov. 2.

Four local runners won their respective races Thursday:

* Jackie Quesnel of Kingston, who topped the 119-runner field in midget girls division, completing the 3.5-kilometre course in 14 minutes, 0.01 seconds;

* Branna MacDougall of Regiopolis Notre Dame, who was first among 111 junior girls over 4.1 kilometres in 15 minutes, 16.37 seconds;

* La Salle's Heather Jaros, who completed the Kingston-area sweep of girls events by finishing the 4.9-kilometre senior race at the head of a 152-runner field, in 17 minutes 42.13 seconds;

* Cameron Linscott of Kingston, who was first in the midget boys race in 20 minutes, 40.71 seconds, leading 111 competitors across the finish line.

In the other two boys races, KC had athletes finish second: Ben Workman, in senior boys division (22 minutes, 52.47 seconds over 7.0 kilometres, 11 seconds behind race winner Eric Wynands of Brockville Thousand Islands) and Alex Drover in the 4.9-kilometre midget boys race (17 minutes, 15.13 seconds, about four and a half seconds behind the winner, Jonathan Stoppa of Madawaska).

Kingston-area athletes swept the podium in two divisions.

Sydenham's Nicole Armstrong was second in senior girls division (18:01.56, 19 seconds behind Jaros as the two Physi-Kult club teammates swapped places from their finish at the Kingston Area championships) while Regi's Emily Drouin came third in 18:23.60.

Behind Linscott in the junior boys race were Ryan Dowdall of La Salle (21:36.77) and Nick Adams of Sydenham (21:37.95).

MacDougall's victory helped Regi to capture the team title in junior girls division, where KC finished second. KC was also second in midget boys and senior boys divisions.

Other local individual qualifiers were Paul Bates of Regi, who was fifth in the midget boys race; his teammate, Paul Sagriff, who was fourth in junior boys competition; Claudia Murphy of Holy Cross, who was seventh in the midget girls race; and senior boys Mitch Kirby of Frontenac and Chris Adams of Sydenham, who finished 8-9 in their event.
