Holy Cross reaches semifinals at OFSAA girls hockey

Posted: March 20th, 2014 @ 6:47pm

Holy Cross Crusaders will play for a medal Friday after they qualified for the semifinals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AAA/AAAA hockey championship tournament in Sudbury.

The Crusaders, the second-seeded team in the 16-team event, defeated Ursuline of Chatham 3-2 in Thursday afternoon's quarter-final round. Each team advanced out of its respective preliminary pool undefeated, with two wins and a tie.

Shelby Perry scored her fifth goal of the tournament and Erin McAuley her fourth as Holy Cross built a 3-1 lead. A late goal pulled 10th-seeded Ursuline within one but the Crusaders hung on for the win.

Rachel Falcone scored the other goal for Holy Cross.

In Friday's 8 a.m. semifinal the Crusaders will face the winner of sixth-seeded Guelph Centennial, 2-0-1 at this tournament, and No. 14 Peterborough St. Peter, 2-1. The winner will advance to the championship game, while the loser will play for the bronze medals.

In its final preliminary round game, Holy Cross and Saltfleet of Stoney Creek played to a 1-1 draw. Each team finished the round-robin 2-0-1.
