Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 12th, 2013 @ 11:53am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Tuesday, March 12, 1963

Harry Sinden's had some help cutting his lineup to the requisite 13 players for tomorrow night's interlocking game with the Port Huron Flags. Jeannot Gilbert was called up to the parent Boston Bruins and Gerry Ouellette learned his hand injury is a broken thumb that will keep him out of the lineup for about five weeks.

Gilbert's promotion, for the remaining five games of the National Hockey League season, leaves the Frontenacs with only two centres, Cliff Pennington and rookie Billy Knibbs.

Ouellette cracked his thumb at the base in a collision with Phil Esposito of the St. Louis Braves on Saturday. He didn't leave the game, however, until after he took a headlong spill over goalie Roger Crozier during the second period. "I broke it against Esposito," Ouellette told Doug McConnelll of the Whig-Standard, "but I finished it off when I tripped over Crozier."

Though barely able to hold his stick, Ouellette helped to set up the game-tying goal Saturday night. He then missed Sunday's game in Sudbury.

* With three weeks left in the regular schedule, Kingston's Don Blackburn, Gilbert and Sudbury's Gord Labossiere are tied atop the league scoring race with 84 points apiece. Marc Dufour of Sudbury and Murray Hall of St. Louis are just one point back at 83.

* Playing goal for Port Huron tomorrow night will be Normand Jacques, Kingston's goalie in the first year of the EPHL in 1959-60.
