Shoeless Joe's beaten by New Hamburg

Posted: July 4th, 2015 @ 11:23pm

A couple of familiar faces weren’t particularly friendly to their former teammates Saturday night at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association junior elimination tournament in Owen Sound.

Greg Hammell and Craig Lyons, two players originally from Owen Sound who joined Napanee for its trip to the Canadian junior championship last year, each had two base-hits as the New Hamburg Cubs defeated Napanee Shoeless Joe’s 4-1 in the undefeated game at the 10-tournament.

Hammell drove in his run with a double in the third inning, when New Hamburg scored twice to overcome a 1-0 Napanee lead. Lyons belted a solo home run in the fifth.

Hammell also collected the pitching win, holding Napanee to just two hits and one unearned run. He struck out eight and didn’t allow a base on balls.

Napanee pitcher Eric Morgan, who has struggled with injuries this season, gave up two runs, both unearned, in four innings. He struck out four and walked one. Ben Broek finished up.

A double by Sloan Creighton and a single by Taylor Brown were the only Napanee hits.

Napanee, which has already qualified for the Canadian championship tournament as the host team, now goes to the loser’s side of the double-elimination draw, where it will play at noon Sunday for a chance to get back to the championship game.

Though Shoeless Joe’s ticket to the national tourney has already been punched, they’ll be playing for the spoils that go to the champion of this event—priority choice of players to add for the Canadian tournament—who last year turned out to be Hammell and Lyons.

Earlier Saturday:

• Morgan struck out 12 and allowed just two singles as Napanee defeated Chatsworth 4-0 Saturday morning. Cole Bolton and Brett Irwin had two hits apiece in an eight-hit Napanee attack. Irwin drove in a pair of runs, and No. 9 hitter Michael Jordan scored twice and delivered a solo home run for the winners, for whom five of the eight hits were for extra bases.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Napanee scored twice on Jordan’s home run and an RBI double by Brown. Two runs in the top of the seventh provided some insurance.

• Bolton had as many hits as he gave up Saturday afternoon, as he led Shoeless Joe’s to a 13-3 win over the Owen Sound Selects. Napanee’s lead-off batter, Bolton singled in the first, third and fourth innings and his grand-slam home run highlighted a seven-run Napanee fifth. He scored three runs and he finished the game with four runs batted in.

From the circle, Bolton allowed four hits and struck out five, but he was also touched for two home runs.

Creighton also homered for Napanee, a three-run shot in the third inning, and he also drove in four runs. Josh Murphy had a second-inning RBI double among his three hits for Shoeless Joe’s.
