Regi wins battle of undefeated teams

Posted: October 20th, 2015 @ 12:37am

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers completed an undefeated regular schedule Monday, when they posted a 1-0 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in a battle of unbeaten teams on the final day of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association field hockey season at Caraco Field.

It was the ninth win of the year for Regi, which put on another splendid defensive display Monday, shutting out an opponent for the seventh time in those nine games.

Alexis Pereira scored the game’s only goal, tipping a pass from Lilly Dickson into the Holy Cross goal. It was just the second goal allowed all season by the Crusaders, who also posted seven shutouts during the regular year.

Regi and Holy Cross each surrendered just two goals all season. Oddly, the only team to score against both of them was the La Salle Black Knights, who ended their season Monday with a 3-1 win over the Loyalist Lancers.

The Knights closed their schedule by winning three of their last four games, to move past the Frontenac Falcons into seventh place, but all that gets them is a quarter-final date Wednesday with Holy Cross.

In other games Monday, the Kingston Blues, with third place already clinched, defeated the Ernestown Eagles 4-0; the Napanee Golden Hawks claimed fourth place by handing the Bayridge Blazers their fourth defeat in their last five games, 2-1, at Bayridge, and the Sydenham Golden Eagles battled Frontenac to a 1-1 tie at Caraco Field.

In a game on Tindall Field, Kiko Kelway, Maddie Henry, Sid Chard and Anna Forman-Willms each scored once for KC, which finished the season 7-2. Blues goalkeeper Cam Champagne-Hartley posted the shutout.

At Loyalist, the Knights got goals from Maddie Veldman, Emily Santin and Hailey McLaren.

Napanee and Bayridge will play a rematch in Wednesday’s quarter-finals, while Frontenac will face Regi and KC will host Sydenham. Times and venues have yet to be determined.
