Regi, Holy Cross to meet for field hockey championship

Posted: October 27th, 2015 @ 12:00am

The top two teams from the regular year will meet to decide the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association field hockey championship. They just don’t know when.

Under normal circumstances the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers and Holy Cross Crusaders, who both won their respective semifinal games Monday, would play Wednesday afternoon at Caraco Field. A severe storm is forecast for that day, however, and KASSAA is pondering whether to delay the game until Thursday.

Whenever it is played, the game will feature undefeated Regi and Holy Cross, which suffered its only defeat, a 1-0 decision, to Regi on the final day of the regular season.

The Panthers didn’t get there easily, though, as they faced a determined group of Napanee Golden Hawks and needed overtime finally to prevail. In a game at Brother O’Gara Field, a goal by Jen Cowan, after a shot by Lilly Dixon on a short corner penalty play 15 minutes into overtime, gave Regi a 1-0 win.

The loss ended what was developing into a storybook season for a Napanee team that went into the game on a six-game undefeated streak, after starting the year 1-3.

At Daniel Field at Holy Cross, the Crusaders needed not just overtime, but penalty strokes to defeat the Kingston Blues. The teams went through regulation time and overtime in a 1-1 deadlock, before the Crusaders outscored the visitors 3-1 in the tie-breaker.
