Regi caps perfect season with win over upstart Marie-Rivier

Defending OFSAA champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers ended the regular high school senior boys volleyball season Thursday with a 3-0 victory over the Marie-Rivier Dragons.

Playing at home, Regi not only won its 11th match in a row, it ended the year without allowing an opponent to win a single set. The Panthers did so on a day when every player registered at least one point.

Regi will host the Granite Ridge Gryphons in a quarter-final match Tuesday. The Gryphons the regular Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association year 5-6, after losing 3-0 Thursday at La Salle. The Sharbot Lake school posted a 4-1 record at home but a 1-5 log on the road.

Elsewhere Thursday, the Loyalist Lancers vaulted past the Sydenham Golden Eagles into third place, posting a 3-0 victory at Sydenham; in a match of teams not bound for the playoffs, the Bayridge Blazers defeated the Napanee Golden Hawks 3-1; the Holy Cross Crusaders posted a straight-sets win over the Queen Elizabeth Raiders, and the Kingston Blues put the final touch on a 9-2 campaign when they put their forfeit victory over Frontenac officially on the books.

In Tuesday’s other quarter-final contests, Marie Rivier, 6-5, will play at KC, Loyalist, 8-3, will entertain La Salle, 6-5, and Holy Cross, 7-4, will travel to Sydenham, which finished fourth at 8-3.
