Regi set to defend senior volleyball title

Posted: November 12th, 2015 @ 9:38pm

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers planned to use a steady outside attack to dispose of the upstart Holy Cross Crusaders in their high school senior boys volleyball semifinal Thursday—and it worked.

With left-side hitters Andrew Borschneck and Liam Huntley delivering several decisive blows, Regi defeated Holy Cross 3-1 to gain a spot in Sunday afternoon’s Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship match in the main gym of the Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Game time is 3 p.m.

The Panthers’ victory ended the hopes of a Holy Cross team that had fallen below .500 midway through the season, but had reeled off five consecutive victories through a semifinal upset of Sydenham on Tuesday. It was, however, the first time in 13 regular season and playoff matches that an opponent managed to win a set against the undefeated regular-season and defending OFSAA AAA champion Panthers.

In Sunday’s final Regi will face the Kingston Blues, who defeated the Loyalist Lancers 3-0 in Thursday’s other semifinal. The Blues finished second in the regular year with a 9-2 record.
