Stirring comeback gives Dragons volleyball win over Napanee

Posted: January 6th, 2016 @ 12:24am

Marie-Rivier Dragons overcame a two-set deficit Tuesday to post a 3-2 victory over the Napanee Golden Hawks as the high school senior girls volleyball season began its post-Christmas segment at Marie-Rivier.

The win enabled the Dragons, 3-3, to move two points ahead of both La Salle and Loyalist in the scramble for the final two playoff spots.

After dropping the opening two sets 23-25, 17-25, Marie-Rivier rallied to claim the match with set victories of 25-16, 25-20, 15-10.

Elsewhere Tuesday in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association, the Holy Cross Crusaders handed the Frontenac Falcons their first defeat of the season, 3-1 at Frontenac; the Kingston Blues blanked the visiting Ernestown Eagles 3-0; the Sydenham Golden Eagles remained undefeated with a straight-sets home-court win over the La Salle Black Knights; the Bayridge Blazers, who began the season with three straight losses, won their fourth match in a row, 3-0, at home, over the Loyalist Lancers, and the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers swept Mille-Iles 3-0.

Playing at home, Regi prevailed 25-3, 25-15, 25-18, as setters Annie Kennedy, Hailey Wolfgram and Logan Rook combined for 15 assists.

Tuesday’s outcomes leave Sydenham, 6-0, alone in first place, two points ahead of Regi, the only other remaining unbeaten team at 5-0, and KC, which is 5-1. All things being equal from here to the end of the season, Holy Cross gained the advantage in the tie-breaker for home court in the quarter-finals, as the Crusaders pulled into a fourth-place tie with Frontenac at 4-1.
