Blues hand Regi its first loss of the season

Posted: January 12th, 2016 @ 11:26pm

Kingston Blues withstood a furious comeback attempt by the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers Tuesday afternoon as they handed Regi its first loss of the high school senior girls volleyball season, 3-1, at Regi.

The Blues, who won the first two sets of the match, 28-26 and 25-18, dropped the third set 25-17. In the fourth set, KC led 24-17 when the home team rallied. After conceding seven straight points on match point, the Blues ultimately prevailed, 26-24.

With the win, KC, 7-1, moved past Regi and the Holy Cross Crusaders, both 6-1, into second place, trailing only undefeated Sydenham. Holy Cross gained its share of third place with a straight sets victory over the La Salle Black Knights.

The Blues got fine performances from libero Jaycee Farmer and Maddi Henry and a spark from junior player Maia Sousa. Regi was led by Hailey Wolfgram, who delivered a number of splendid attacks.

In the only other Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association match played Tuesday, the Bayridge Blazers won their fifth in a row, 3-0 in Odessa over the Ernestown Eagles. Elsewhere, Mother Nature was the winner, as matches involving Sydenham, Granite Ridge and Napanee were postponed due to the storm.
