Crusaders win field lacrosse opener

Posted: April 21st, 2013 @ 1:57pm

Rookie Nolan MacInnis scored three goals and rookie goalkeeper Matt Marino allowed just three goals to lead the Holy Cross Crusaders to an 8-6 win over the Frontenac Falcons in a high school field lacrosse game Friday on the Queen's University upper west campus field.

The teams battled not only each other, but hail, sleet, wet snow, rain and wind in their first game of the season.

"It was a very aggressive and physical game with numerous play-stopping hits and high emotions," Holy Cross coach John Esford said.

MacInnis is a Grade 10 student at Regiopolis Notre Dame playing with the Crusaders since his school does not have a team. Nick Amaral, Bryce Drew, David Brockway, Mike Latour and freshman Will Parkes also scored for Holy Cross. Marino was in goal for all but half of one period, and he blanked Frontenac in the third quarter.

Field lacrosse is not an official Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association sport, since five schools need to enter teams for a sport to gain KASSAA sanction. Frontenac has had a team since 2003, Holy Cross since 2005. They play an exhibition and tournament schedule.
