Frontenacs 50th

Posted: February 23rd, 2013 @ 9:58am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Saturday, February 23, 1963

A pivotal home-and-home weekend series starts badly for the Frontenacs, who drop a 4-1 decision at home to Hull-Ottawa to fall two points behind the Canadiens in the battle for first place in the Eastern Professional Hockey League.

Wren Blair, the "volcanic boss" of the Frontenacs, erupted after the game and gave what the Kingston Whig-Standard described as a "thorough tongue-lashing" to his team. He stormed out of the arena, brushing past reporters with a curt "I have no comment on that game."

Cliff Pennington scored the only goal for Kingston, ending a scoreless streak of 112 minutes and five seconds against Hull-Ottawa at home. The teams will meet again Sunday in Hull.
