Regi girls complete sweep of Irish rugby tour

Posted: March 22nd, 2015 @ 5:56pm

The girls rugby team from Regiopolis Notre Dame completed its March Break tour of Ireland Saturday with a 24-0 win over Wicklow RFC.

Playing under the lights on a beautiful, clear night on the east coast town, the Panthers faced their toughest match of the three-game series, according to coach Alana Ramsay. The home team came out strong and enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening 15 minutes of play, she wrote in an email.

The Wicklow squad proved to be masters of holding up the ball in contact, resulting in numerous turnovers and thus stalling any RND momentum,” she wrote.

The Panthers settled in, however, and with less than two minutes to play Regi got the only try of the first half from Jess East. Annie Kennedy converted to make the score 7-0 at halftime.

Regi imposed its physical prowess in the second half, giving Wicklow no opportunity to mount attacks. The Panthers dominated the breakdowns and controlled ball possession.

“Through the hard work of the forwards, led by Stephanie Rodriguez, the backs, through good running lines, exposed gaps in the defence,” Ramsay wrote. “Danae O’Neill went on numerous runs to provide excellent field position and maintain pressure in Wicklow’s half of the field.”

Regi got two tries from Hannah Greenwood and another from Courtney Spratt in the second half. Kennedy kicked another convert.
