Two TDs by Calvin deFayette spark Grenadiers past Cornwall

Posted: June 7th, 2015 @ 3:07pm

Kingston Grenadiers, behind a 130-yard rushing performance by Calvin deFayette, moved one game above .500 Saturday with a 31-13 Ontario Varsity Football League victory over the Cornwall Wildcats.

The win was the second in a row on the road for the Grenadiers, after a season-opening loss at home. Cornwall, which had scored just one touchdown in its first two games, is still looking for its first victory three games into the young season.

With running back Konner Burtenshaw nursing a broken finger, he and deFayette split the ball-carrying duty. DeFayette carried the ball 13 times, scoring a pair of touchdowns, on runs of three and six yards.

Burtenshaw carried 10 times for 52 yards as the Grenadiers got the bulk of their offence, 203 yards, on the ground.

Jeremy Pendergast, on a 21-yard run, and Carter Matheson, on a 10-yard pass from Dylan Fisher, scored the other Kingston touchdowns. Mike Bashall converted all four scores and kicked a 19-yard field goal.

Fisher completed 11 of his 22 pass attempts—including five in a row at one point in the middle part of the ball game—for 87 yards. Tanner DeJong was 2-for-3 for 27 yards. Neither quarterback threw an interception.

Pendergast was the top receiver, with five catches for 45 yards.

The Grenadiers will play their next game Saturday against the York-Simcoe Bucs in the second game of a doubleheader at Loyalist Collegiate. York-Simcoe, 0-2, is coming off a 72-0 pasting Saturday at the hands of Ottawa Myers Riders.

The varsity game is scheduled for 4 p.m., following the 1 o’clock junior varsity game, also against York-Simcoe.

The JV Grenadiers also improved to 2-1 Saturday with a 30-7 win over the winless Halton Cowboys in Milton.
