Frontenacs 50th

Posted: April 10th, 2013 @ 2:09pm

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Wednesday, April 10, 1963

Kingston Frontenacs get three goals from Dick Cherry, four assists from Cliff Pennington and "sensational" goaltending from Bruce Gamble in a 6-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves in the opening game of the Eastern Professional Hockey League final at the Community Centre.

Cherry just failed to get a fourth goal when he was robbed by Sudbury goaltender Gerry Cheevers from point blank range late in the third period.

A 10-day layoff appeared to hurt the Frontenacs in the first period but Gamble came up with some remarkable saves, Ron Brown wrote in the Whig-Standard, as the Frontenacs escaped the period tied 1-1. Pennington set Pete Panagabko up for a go-ahead goal at 2:22 of the second period and "from there on it as all Frontenacs."

The other Kingston goals were scored by Don Blackburn and Wayne Connelly. Red Armstrong and Mike McMahon scored for the Wolves.

Gamble made 34 saves while Cheevers faced 33 shots in the Sudbury goal.
