Sport Funding & Promotion
SPORT KINGSTON endeavors to assist local sports organizations in securing grants by linking them with the appropriate granting agencies and organizations and also by furnishing advice as to how the grant application is to be prepared and submitted.
SPORT KINGSTON, unfortunately, is not a granting agency. At best, it is a source of advice and encouragement in this connection.
Broadly speaking, there are two types of grants available to sports organizations: project grants and operational grants. Projects are invariably oriented to a specific program with specific outcomes within a limited time frame. Operations refer to the daily administration of a sports organization (i.e., routine paperwork, answering telephones, attending to queries, etc.)
The overwhelming majority of grants awarded to sports organizations are project oriented. In the Kingston, area, there are three main agencies which furnish project oriented grants. They are:
- The Ontario Trillium Foundation.

- Kingston Employment and Youth Services (KEYS) in Kingston.

- The Community Foundation of Greater Kingston.

With regard to Operational grants, the general picture is not too encouraging for not-for-profit organizations. There are very few grants available in this connection and those that are available are tightly circumscribed in character and only offer partial payment for wages earned by a student (between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four). These grants are largely given for office work undertaken during the summer months for a local sports organization.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Ontario Ministry of Culture.
It is one of Canada's leading grant making foundations.
The foundation provides grants to charitable and not-for-profit organizations to fund capital, operating and specific project costs in support of four sectors: arts and culture, environment, human & social services, and sports & recreation.

Grants will help communities increase inclusion and accessibility in hockey and soccer programs for children and youth. Examples of possible initiatives include decreasing or eliminating enrollment costs, equipment sharing/swapping programs, increasing the number of coaches and officials, improving the quality of playing surfaces or creating new fields or rinks.
The Canada Games Council has received a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the period January 2005- January 2008 to deliver fifteen Canada Games Days events in Ontario communities. The objective is to partner with Ontario communities through community sport councils and other organizations to promote physical activity and sport. The Canada Games Council is now open to expressions of interest from Ontario community sport councils and other partners in participating in delivery of Canada Games Days.
A community-based Canada Games Day is a mini sport and physical activity festival. Activities will be designed to engage children and youth, especially those aged 4 to 14, and may include opportunities to participate in different physical activity and sport programs, demonstrations by athletes, celebrity physical activity and sport challenges, sport competitions, art, dance and musical performances, workshops and seminars, and information for youth and parents on physical activity, wellness and sport involvement.
Successful Canada Games Days will likely result from broad-based community partnerships involving local sport clubs, municipal recreation programs, schools, service clubs, public health officials, corporate sponsors and others with a stake in promoting physical activity, health and wellness. Inclusiveness, partnership and sharing of the Canada Games dream will be highlights of the Day. Community sport councils are designated as key partners in facilitating these community partnerships and organizing and delivering the events, due to their central role in community sport.
For communities, this is an opportunity to work together on a manageable, focused event,
and to promote the health and wellness of youth. These events provide an opportunity for children and youth to be excited about physical activity and sport.
For community sport councils, this is an opportunity to play a key central role in community-building, to partner with national sport organizations, and potentially to generate revenue to sustain sport council activities.
Ontario Community Sport Councils or other similar community sport, recreation and active living groups are invited to apply to host a Community Canada Games Day to be held in 2005, 2006 or 2007. Approved hosts will receive a grant of $5,000 for an initial Canada Games Day, and $3,000 for subsequent Canada Games Days, in addition to resources and other support to help make each Canada Games Day a success.

"Sport Is" Development
For those sport organizations (affiliated with Ontario Provincial Sport Organizations), directly receiving financial donations or gifts, arrangements can be made to issue a charitable income tax receipt through the SPORT IS program administered by the Sport Alliance of Ontario. This eliminates the necessity of having to undergo a circuitous and lengthy route through that sport’s national sport organization which also can issue charitable income tax receipts on behalf of local sport organizations.
For information in this regard, contact the Sport Alliance of Ontario at www.sportalliance.com
