Queen's women win for the sixth time in their last seven, move into second place

Posted: February 8th, 2014 @ 12:04am

In a splendid performance in which she scored a season-best 23 points, Liz Boag led the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 51-47 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in an Ontario University Athletics women's basketball game Friday night.

Playing in the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre, Boag was 8-for-10 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range. She scored 16 of her team's 23 points in the first half, as the Gaels went into the intermission with a one-point lead.

The win moved Queen's, 13-6, two points ahead of Ottawa in the race for second place in the East division and a first-round playoff bye. It was the sixth win in the last seven games for the Gaels; the third loss in their last four games - the second to Queen's - for the Gee-Gees.

Ottawa may have been able to neutralize Boag in the second half but the Gee-Gees couldn't stifle her fellow Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association grad, Jenny Wright, who scored 15 of her 17 points in the final 20 minutes.

The Gee-Gees took the lead at the end of the third quarter and led 40-37 with less than six minutes to play when Wright scored. Not long after that she assisted on a basket by Andrea Priamo as Queen's took the lead for good with about five minutes to go.

Wright then scored six of Queen's next eight points, and her basket with 28 seconds left opened a four-point lead. Julia Soriano made a pair of free throws for Ottawa with five seconds on the clock, but Boag closed out the win with a pair of free throws in the dying moments.

Plagued by some dreadful shooting - the Gee-Gees shot 28 per cent from the field, and were 1-for-15 from beyond the three-point arc - Ottawa was led by Maddie Stephen, who scored 12 points and snagged a game-best 16 rebounds. Kingston's Sarah Besselink scored three points for the Gee-Gees.

Stephanie MacDonald, the fourth-leading scorer in the division who averages better than 14 points per game for Ottawa, was held to just six on a night when she was 2-for-14 from the field, 0-for-6 from three-point range.

Tonight at 6 o'clock the Gaels will host division-leading Carleton, 14-5, with a chance to move into a tie for first place. Carleton stayed one game ahead of Queen's with a 61-50 win Friday night at York.

Queen's men suffered their seventh loss in 10 games since Christmas Friday night, 103-76 to the No. 2-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Ottawa led 51-35 at halftime and scored 12 of the first 16 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

In winning for the fifth game in a row - and scoring 100 points four the fourth time in that span - the second-place Gee-Gees improved to 17-2. The victory came via some spectacular shooting as Ottawa shot almost 50 per cent from the field, made 15 of 31 three-point shots and hit 90 per cent of its free throws.

Terry Thomas had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Gee-Gees, while Johnny Berhanemeskel, who was 5-for-6 from three-point range, scored 20 points.

Roshane Roberts scored 16 points for Queen's, while Sukhpreet Singh and Patrick Street scored 12 points apiece for the Gaels, who got scoring from 10 different players.

Things do not get easier for the Gaels Saturday night, when they will host the undefeated and No. 1-ranked Carleton Ravens. Game time is 8 p.m.
