Overtime goal sends women's hockey semifinal to deciding game

Posted: February 21st, 2014 @ 11:39pm

Queen's Golden Gaels may have had the Guelph Gryphons' number the past few years but the Gryphons aren't going quietly this year.

A goal by Christine Grant in the fourth minute of the second overtime Friday night at the Memorial Centre gave Guelph a 2-1 win over Queen's, a victory that tied the best-of-three Ontario University Athletics women's hockey semifinal at a game apiece.

The series will be decided Sunday afternoon in Guelph.

The Gaels, defending conference champions, have eliminated the Gryphons somewhere along the line three of the last four years. In that time, they've engaged in four overtime games, including a triple-overtime affair in the series opener Wednesday in Guelph.

After two scoreless periods Friday night, Shawna Griffin of Queen's finally scored the game's first goal in its 52nd minute, her third goal in four post-season games.

It was looking good for the series win until Jessica Pinkerton, who tied for the league lead with 16 goals in the regular season, scored for Guelph with 36 seconds left in the third period.

After a scoreless first overtime, in which Queen's outshot Guelph 4-3, Grant, second in the league with 34 regular-season points, collected the game winner on her team's second shot of the second overtime.
