Holy Cross qualifies for quarter-finals at OFSAA girls hockey

Holy Cross Crusaders and Saltfleet of Stoney Creek will meet at 8 o'clock Thursday morning to determine top spot in their preliminary pool at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AAA/AAAA hockey tournament in Sudbury.

Both teams have already qualified for the quarter-finals at the 16-team championship after they each won both their games on the first day of the three-day event.

Holy Cross made an auspicious debut Wednesday morning, defeating Macdonald-Cartier of Sudbury 5-0. Avery Kent, Shelby Perry, Myka Luchuk, Erin McAuley and Claudia Murphy shared the goals as the Crusaders, the tournament's No. 2 seed, outshot Macdonald-Cartier 45-12.

In the afternoon, Holy Cross scored four times in the second period en route to a 7-1 win over No. 5 Oakville St. Ignatius of Loyola. Perry, with three goals, McAuley, with two, Brenna Murphy and Grace Pereira scored for the Crusaders.

Twelfth-seeded Saltfleet, meanwhile, defeated St. Ignatius 6-0 and Macdonald-Cartier 7-0 on Wednesday.
