Kings end exhibition schedule with 16-10 loss at Gloucester

Posted: May 3rd, 2014 @ 6:20pm

OTTAWA - Kingston Kings dropped their second exhibition game of the spring Saturday afternoon, 16-10 to the Gloucester Griffins, as they concluded their preseason junior lacrosse schedule at Earl Armstrong Arena.

With players committed to work and Josh Smith injured in Friday night's contest - among other absences - the Kings played with a depleted lineup and, after two players were ejected during the course of the game, they had just 10 runners on the floor by the end.

Kingston trailed 2-0 16 minutes into the game but a flurry of goals sent Gloucester into the first intermission with a 5-1 lead. It was 8-2 midway through the second period but the Kings got it back to 9-5 before the home team scored four straight to start the third.

From that 13-5 deficit, Kingston rallied with a spurt of five goals in less than five minutes to draw within 13-10 but fatigue caught up with the visitors and, after calling time out, Gloucester closed with three unanswered goals.

David Plots had a seven-point day for the Griffins, including three goals. Josh O'Connell and Tye Simard also scored three times for Gloucester, while Ryan Lafranchise had two goals and two assists. Matt Lewis, Matt McKay, Bryce Simard, Tony Dillon and former Brockville Ballistic player Carey Roche shared the other goals for Gloucester, which was 0-16 a year ago.

Zach Masterson led all scorers in the losing effort, with five goals and a pair of assists. He scored three of the goals in Kingston's third-period flurry and he assisted on another. Austin Maracle and Jonah Lewis each scored twice for the Kings, while rookie Erick Brick had a goal and three assists.

The Kings will open their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League schedule Thursday in Cornwall, against the three-time defending East division champion Celtics.
