Jesse Andrews may miss Saturday's game

Posted: September 4th, 2014 @ 8:34pm

Queen's Golden Gaels running back Jesse Andrews may not be in the team's lineup Saturday when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees for an Ontario University Athletics football game at Richardson Stadium.

Andrews, who rushed for more than 100 yards in each of his first two intercollegiate starts in 2012 and last year led the nation with 8.6 yards per carry-as his team's No. 2 back-was in and out of the Queen's lineup a number of times Monday in Windsor, getting medical attention on the field late in the first quarter and a couple of times after that.

He carried the ball 16 times for 93 yards before leaving the game for good in the second quarter.

"He's a pretty physical runner and it was a physical game," Gaels coach Pat Sheahan said Thursday. "(Windsor) is big up front, so there were lots of knees and legs and shoulders and he was running through a lot of them.

"He had a lot of carries in the Concordia game, too, so I think it's going to be like that for Jesse (this year). If he's going to get pretty well used in most games, he's likely going to need more than the typical 48 hours rest after most of his games.

"We'll see how it is. This is a short week so we have to make a decision whether playing him would be in the best interests of everyone."

The nature of Andrews' injury was not disclosed.

In his place Monday, sophomore Jonah Pataki carried the ball 14 times for 66 yards. His career-best game was last year at Waterloo, where he was the fourth-string running back but still rushed for 118 yards, all of it in the fourth quarter of a 78-21 victory.
