Record-tying win keeps Laval at No. 1

Posted: September 23rd, 2014 @ 4:09pm

A simple victory would have been enough for the Laval rouge et or to maintain its place atop the weekly ranking of Canadian university football teams, but the two-time defending national champion put an exclamation point on it.

For the fourth week in a row Laval lives at No. 1, leaving no doubt as it whipped the Bishop's Gaiters 72-15 Saturday in Lennoxville, scoring 25 points in the last nine minutes of the second quarter to break open an 18-15 game.

In that game, Boris Bede kicked a Canadian Interuniversity Sport record eight field goals.

It was the most points scored by the rouge et or since they edged Mount Allison 73-7 in October, 2009, 59 games ago. It was also Laval's 21st consecutive victory, matching the CIS record set by McMaster in 2011-12, a streak that came to an end when the Marauders were defeated by Laval in the 2012 Vanier Cup game.

Laval hasn't lost since Oct. 13, 2012, a 23-20 setback at Montreal.

The rouge et or will attempt to break the record Saturday when it hosts winless McGill.

Not much went on in the Top 10 in a week where ranked teams met just once, and the No. 2 Calgary Dinos survived their test with No. 7 Saskatchewan, scoring two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the game to break a tie and emerge with a 38-24 victory.

All the way down to No. 8, the ranking remains unchanged from last week. The only movement came at the bottom, where Concordia, undefeated through three games for the first time since 2006, and Manitoba, also a winner last week but only 2-1, traded spots at 9 and 10.

Though 3-0 for the fist time since 1998, defending Atlantic conference champion Mount Allison is still not getting a lot of love from the Football Reporters of Canada panel, as the Mounties continue to languish at No. 8. Perhaps the conference will win some respect this weekend as interlocking play with the Quebec conference begins.

This week's ranking, with record, previous rank, my rank, last week's result and next opponent:

Laval, 3-0 (1) (1), beat Bishop's 72-15; next: Saturday, vs. McGill.
Calgary, 3-0 (2) (2), beat No. 7 Saskatchewan 38-24; next: Friday, vs. No. 10 Manitoba.

Gueph, 3-1 (6) (7), beat Queen's 66-0; next: Saturday, Oct. 4, at Windsor.
Saskatchewan, 2-1 (7) (9), lost 38-24 to No. 2 Calgary; next: Saturday, at Regina.
