Kingston champ to play South West champion in OFSAA Bowl football game

Posted: October 6th, 2015 @ 12:03am

The AAA champion football team in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association will play in an OFSAA Bowl game in Hamilton Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 12:30 p.m., against the top AAA team from the South West Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

That conference comprises teams from Sarnia, Chatham and Windsor. Typically, W.F. Herman of Windsor is the strongest AAA football team from that region, and this year it has won both of its games by a combined score of 108-16.

After redistribution, there are only two triple-A schools in all of eastern Ontario, and they’re both in Kingston: Regiopolis Notre Dame and Holy Cross. Frontenac, a AAA school until this fall whose enrolment now falls with in the AA bracket, has opted to play up a level.

At the end of the regular KASSAA season, the AAA team with the best record will gain direct entry to the county final Saturday, Nov. 14. The other two teams will play in a semifinal match Tuesday, Nov. 10. At the moment, all three teams are 1-1, Regi having beaten Frontenac 16-15 in the only game involving two of them.

This year’s series of nine bowl games will be played over three days, starting Monday, Nov. 30, at Tim Hortons Field, home of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Some of the historic bowl rivalries have been revived in the Metro and Golden Horseshoe bowls. The other games have been given names, but the opponents were drawn at random and really have nothing to do with the names those games been given. The eastern Ontario champion, for instance, is playing in the so-called National Capital Bowl, but not against the National Capital association champion, which is instead playing in the so-called Western Bowl.

(The more fitting thing to do would have been to name them for long-serving football coaches and administrators of distinction.)

Last year, Frontenac defeated Toronto Richview 24-20 in an OFSAA Bowl game at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium.
