Knights, Regi, Crusaders remain unbeaten; Bayridge, Frontenac lose their first

Posted: October 6th, 2015 @ 11:06pm

La Salle Black Knights stayed unbeaten Tuesday afternoon, and they did so by handing the Frontenac Falcons their first loss of the high school senior girls basketball season, 45-27, at La Salle.

The Knights, 3-0, had three double-digit scoring performances, led by Jamie Mumby, who scored 13 points. La Salle also got 12 points from Abbey Hetherington and 11 from Sophie Langlois.

Eiliegh McKenzie had 10 points for Frontenac.

In other Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior games Tuesday, the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers and Holy Cross Crusaders also remained undefeated, Regi posting a 52-11 home-court win over the Bayridge Blazers, and Holy Cross getting the best of the Loyalist Lancers at LC, 66-35.

Also, the Sydenham Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 with a 39-12 win over the Ernestown Eagles at Sydenham.

The Panthers were patient offensively, moving the ball well around the perimeter against the Bayridge zone defence. They coupled that with aggressive defence that led to numerous turnovers and several transition baskets.

Bridget Mulholland led Regi to its fourth win in a row with 16 points. Hailey Wolfgram scored 12, a total that included a pair of three-point baskets.

Regan Hawley had five points for Bayridge, a team that lost for the first time in three games, but nonetheless drew praise from Panthers coach Lesley Stevenson.

“Bayridge is a young team with a lot of potential,” Stevenson wrote, in an email. “You can see that they have the basketball pass-and-move concept, but without two of their leaders, they lacked the confidence to take the shot at times.

“I would look out for this team to improve over the season.”

Play resumes Thursday with four games, as the three front-runners all will put their undefeated streaks on the line on the road: Regi at Sydenham, Holy Cross at Frontenac and La Salle at Bayridge.
