La Salle, Rideau reach OFSAA quarter-finals

Posted: November 27th, 2015 @ 7:35pm

Two Kingston-area teams have reached the quarter-finals of their respective provincial girls high school basketball championship tournaments, but for the Holy Cross Crusaders, the quest for an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations title ended Friday.

The Rideau District Lions got 11 points apiece from Clevelyn Naim and Leah Rice as they defeated Rainy River 54-28 in a second-round game at the single-A tournament in Windsor. The fourth-seeded Lions scored 20 points in the first quarter, taking a 13-point lead, and they won going away.

The victory sent the Lions into a Friday night quarter-final match with Timmins O’Gorman, the tournament’s fifth-seeded team. Like Rideau, O’Gorman, which won its second-round game 35-23 over Oshawa G.L. Roberts, goes into the game with a 2-0 record.

At the AA tournament in Kingsville, the La Salle Black Knights rebounded from a first-round defeat with a 39-27 win over Patrick Fogarty of Orillia, a first-round winner. Abbey Hetherington scored 14 points for the Knights, who trailed 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, led 26-24 at halftime, and put the game away in a fourth quarter where they outscored Fogarty 13-3.

La Salle, the Eastern Ontario champion and the 12th-seeded team in the tournament, has a Friday night quarter-final match with third-seeded Wallaceburg, which has won both of its first two games at the tournament.

Despite a 17-point performance by Jenna Whalen, Holy Cross was eliminated at the AAA championship in Windsor after a 41-26 defeat at the hands of St. Catharines Winston Churchill. The Crusaders, first-round winners who were seeded 14th, bowed to a Churchill team that was seeded 10th but had lost its opening game.

Holy Cross was unable to sustain a comeback that saw the Crusaders rally from an 11-4 first-quarter deficit to trail by just a point, 15-14, at halftime. They ultimately succumbed to a 13-5 third quarter.
