Panthers, Eagles will meet to determine volleyball title

Posted: February 18th, 2016 @ 8:22pm

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers will face the Sydenham Golden Eagles in the championship high school senior girls volleyball match Sunday night.

The Panthers were 3-0 winners Thursday over the Kingston Blues in one Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association semifinal, while Sydenham blanked the Holy Cross Crusaders 3-0 in the other.

In winning the match 25-16, 25-16, 25-22, the Panthers avenged the only defeat they suffered during the 12-game regular year, a 3-1 KC victory in January.

After a dismal serving game vs. Marie-Rivier in Wednesday’s quarter-final, the Panthers served tough throughout the match, coach Pat Farrell wrote in an email, resulting in many free balls. Strong passing by rightside Logan Rook and libero Maddy O'Coin initiated the offence, and leftside Hailey Wolfgram showed why she is one of the best hitters in the league, leading the Panthers with 14 kills.

When the two finalists met during the regular season, Regi defeated Sydenham 3-1 on Jan. 19.

Sunday’s championship match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the main gym at the Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation Centre.
