Local athletes win 16 events at Brockville track meet

Three Kingston-area high school athletes who ended last track and field season with provincial honours began the new one Saturday in promising form.
Napanee's Leah Hill, Frontenac's Ben Cross and Sydenham's Wade Embury, all medalists at last June's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships, were among four local athletes who each won two events at the 37th annual Kinsmen-Hungerford Invitational track and field meet at Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville.
Hill, of Napanee, the OFSAA gold medalist as a midget last year, got her junior season underway with a first-place performance in discus, 27.95 metres. She also won shot put, at 9.50 metres, and she was fifth in the javelin throw.
Cross, also a junior, won both the long jump (5.67 metres) and javelin (45.99 metres). He prevailed in javelin, the event in which he won the OFSAA midget silver medal last year, by almost two metres.
Embury, the OFSAA bronze medalist over 400 metres last year, won both senior boys 200 and 400 metres, in 21.96 and 49.94 seconds, respectively.
Saturday's other two two-event winner was also from Sydenham - Emily Fauvel, who won senior girls 100 and 200 metres, in 13.08 and 36.83 seconds, respectively.
Six other county athletes and one team - the Sydenham boys open 1,600-metre relay team - won events at the meet, the first of the scholastic season for most local competitors. Three of them are from La Salle:
* Lilie Dixon, who won junior girls high jump, clearing 1.55 metres;
* Lacey Latimer, who won junior girls 200 metres in 28.13 seconds and was also fifth in the 80-metre hurdles and part of a 400-metre relay team that was fourth.
* Heather Jaros, winner of senior girls 3,000 metres (with a 12-second margin of victory in 10 minutes 42.13 seconds. She was also second over 800 metres (2:10.06).
Sydenham had two other individual event winners. Brodie Latimer won junior boys 100-metre hurdles (15.29 seconds) and he was third in 300-metre hurdles (44.53 seconds) in a race where the top three finishers were separated by just 20 one-hundredths of a second. His teammate, Eric Lusk, won midget boys high jump, clearing 1.70 metres, and he was also fourth in the 100-metre hurdles.
Tanner Armstrong of Frontenac was the other local competitor to win an event. He captured midget boys discus, with a best attempt of 35.02 seconds. He was also third in shot put and fourth in javelin.
Other top performances were turned in by Sydenham senior Jay Dearborn, second in both the 400-metre hurdles and high jump and third in javelin; La Salle midget boy Reuben Smith, who was second in the 100 metres and third in both the 200 metres and long jump; Molly-Beth Kaiser of Napanee, who was third in both midget girls triple jump and shot put; and Loyalist senior Isabelle Froom, who was second in the 200 metres and fourth in the 100 metres, after posting the fastest time in qualifying for the final of the latter.
Second-place performances were turned in by Taigan Ardern of Napanee (junior girls triple jump), Hana Gadzik of Frontenac (junior girls shot put; she was also fourth in javelin), Sydenham's Celina Grey (senior girls long jump, where at 4.83 metres she was just five centimetres behind the winner), Liam Hillis (junior boys 100-metre hurdles) and Ben Trickey (senior boys 400 metres) and Sharbot Lake senior Johnny Vinkle (shot put).
The annual Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association track and field championships will begin with the discus and javelin events Wednesday, May 15, at Richardson Stadium, and conclude the following day at the Invista Centre.
