Cassidy Tran fifth in swim final at Canada Games

Posted: August 8th, 2013 @ 8:32pm

Though she dropped almost a tenth of a second off her time in the morning heats, Cassidy Tran of the Kingston Y Penguins missed the podium on the last night of competition in the pool at the Canada Summer Games Thursday at Sherbrooke, Que.

Tran finished fifth in the final of the women's Special Olympics 50-metre freestyle in 38.86 seconds. She had the fourth-best time in the morning preliminaries, 38.94 seconds.

Miori Henault of Quebec won the gold medal, her third in these Games, in 34.46 seconds. Celine Schmidt of Alberta claimed the bronze at 35.93.

Tran reached the final in all five of her swims, winning the gold medal in the 50-metre breaststroke Monday night and following that with two fourth-place finishes, a fifth and a sixth.

In the centre sportif at the University of Sherbrooke Thursday morning, Manitoba defeated Ontario 3-2 in the bronze-medal match of the women's volleyball tournament. Brett Hagarty of the Queen's Golden Gaels played all five sets as Ontario bowed 20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 17-15.
