Local sports hall of fame names five new members

Posted: January 7th, 2014 @ 11:03pm

It took 14 years for the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame to get around to the local volleyball community. Tuesday night they recognized two of its members.

Brenda Willis, in her 27th year as varsity men's coach at Queen's University, and Dale Huddleston, who took 12 Ernestown Secondary School teams to provincial high school championship tournaments, are the first people connected with the sport of volleyball to be selected to the local sports hall.

They were among five new members introduced at City Hall as the hall's class of 2014.

Others to be enshrined at the annual induction dinner May 2 are running coach Al Cantlay, Bill Darlington, one of the founders of the Kingston Township Voyageurs hockey club, and Pat Hegarty, a long-time hockey and stock-car racing official.

A varsity track and cross-runner at Queen's, Cantlay coached at the university for five years and subsequently served the Kingston Road Runners Association as a coach, adviser, race organizer, volunteer, sponsor or fundraiser for more than 30 years.

Darlington, whose building supply company for years sponsored youth hockey and softball teams, was involved in the concept, design and construction of both Centre 70 and Cataraqui Community Centre. He served as a director of the Voyageurs hockey club for 10 years through 1983.

Hegarty began officiating after playing junior B hockey for the Kingston Victorias. For 21 years he presided over junior B, intermediate, senior A, Canadian university and American college hockey games. He also officiated at the 1978 international oldtimers championships in Copenhagen.

Synonymous with volleyball at Ernestown, Huddleston coached 20 Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Associations boys and girls championship teams. A specialist in the throwing disciplines, he also coached 33 OFSAA track and field medallists. An executive in high school sport at the local, area and provincial levels, Huddleston has also officiated volleyball at many levels for 41 years.

In addition to the six Ontario university championship teams Willis has coached at Queen's, she also coached at the provincial level (her Ontario team won the gold medal at the Canada Games in 1993) and internationally, with Canadian teams that won bronze and silver medals at the Maccabia Games in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Willis also served the Ontario Volleyball Association as president for 10 years, 1999-2009.

This year's inductees bring membership in the hall to 153.
