Owen Klassen scores six as Canada finishes fourth in FISU basketball

Posted: July 17th, 2013 @ 1:48am

A second-half comeback fell short Tuesday and Canada was defeated 87-74 by Serbia in the bronze medal match of the men's basketball competition on the final day of the World Student Games in Kazan, Russia.

Kingston's Owen Klassen had six points and six rebounds for Canada, which finished fourth in the 24-team tournament. The Canadians had been undefeated in six games through the quarter-finals. Russia, which defeated Canada in the semifinals, went on to win the gold medal, with an 81-74 victory Tuesday over Australia.

Canada trailed for virtually all of the first half, with Klassen's first field goal lifting his team to within two points - the Canadians' smallest deficit - midway through the second quarter. Trailing by 10 points, 47-37, to begin the second half, Klassen opened scoring in the third quarter and Canada went on to tie the game with less than two minutes to play in the period, 57-57. A basket at the buzzer sent Canada into the fourth quarter with a two-point lead.

Klassen's final basket gave Canada its biggest lead of the game, 68-64, with 7:30 left in the game but Serbia then went on a 16-of-18 run to take a 10-point lead with 1:44 to play that proved insurmountable.
