Kings bow 10-6 in series opener

Posted: July 17th, 2013 @ 2:48am

BROOKLIN - An old nemesis reared its head Tuesday night and doomed the Kingston Kings to a 10-6 defeat at the hands of the Whitby Warriors in the opening game of their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff series at the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena.

The rapid-fire blitz of opposition scoring twice stung the Kings, as the Warriors scored three times in 67 seconds late in the first period to take a 4-1 lead in a game the Kings had generally played well to that point. Whitby then broke the game open early in the second period with four goals in just over five minutes - two of them on the power play - to take an 8-1 lead.

Unlike the last time the teams met - when Whitby went on to complete a 14-3 rout - this time the Kings fought back, outscoring the home team 5-2 the rest of the way. Whitby's lead had been cut to 9-5 by the end of the second period and the teams traded goals in the final seven minutes of the third.

Zach Masterson led Kingston with two goals and two assists. Kingston has scored 20 goals in three games this year against Whitby; Masterson has seven of them, and assists on five others.

Bryce Drew, Kaleb Bingley, Jake Evoy and Stuart Johnston scored once each for the Kings, who played without 19-goal scorer Haneh Brant, due back today from a North American youth and elders First Nations leadership conference in California.

Collin Amodeo, Zack Lysyk and Connor Scott had two goals apiece for Whitby, while Jeff Fernandes had a goal and three assists. Mark Pryor, Matt Holliday and Connor O'Rahilly shared the other Warriors goals.

Both teams did a good job of controlling their opponent's top scorers. Whitby contained Kingston's Kyle Aylesworth and Josh Smith, the league's fifth and ninth-ranked individual scorers in the regular season with 32 goals each and 58 and 52 points, respectively, without a point. Kingston held Whitby's Connor van Ryn, he of the team-leadng 29 regular-season goals - eight of them in two games versus the Kings - to two assists.

Whitby outshot the Kings 57-52. After falling behind 8-1, Kingston goaltender David Joseph was superb, allowing just two goals on 24 shots in the final 32 minutes of the game.

The best-of-five quarter-final series resumes Wednesday night at Centre 70. Game time is 8 o'clock.
