Football Gaels debut at No. 2

Posted: August 27th, 2013 @ 3:06pm

Queen's Golden Gaels are No. 2 in the preseason national ranking of university football teams, announced today by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

It's the highest the Gaels have ever been ranked in the preseason poll, conducted among members of the University Football Reporters of Canada.

The last time Queen's was ranked as high as No. 2 was the Vanier Cup season of 2009. A year ago the Gaels debuted at No. 6.

Defending national champion Laval, which is returning 11 of 12 players from the offence that won the Vanier Cup last year, received all 20 first-place votes. The rouge et or defeated the five-time defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinosaurs 32-3 in a preseason match Saturday.

Queen's, 52-1 winner Sunday over York in its regular-season opener, is followed by Calgary at No. 3.

Three other Ontario University Athletics teams debut in the Top 10 this week: No. 4 Western, No. 6 McMaster and No. 7 Guelph.

Three of the six teams in Quebec and three of the six in Canada West can also be found in the initial Top 10.

There are no teams ranked from the Atlantic conference.

The top 10, with record, last week's result and next opponent:

1. Laval, 0-0, defeated No. 3 Calgary 32-3 (exhibition); next: Saturday vs. McGill.
