Ryan Granberg is new all-time rushing leader at Queen's

Posted: September 29th, 2013 @ 1:27am

LONDON - With his best game of the season, Golden Gaels tailback Ryan Granberg Saturday became the best ball carrier in the recorded history of Queen's University football.

Granberg, a phys-ed student from Sherwood Park, Alta., in his fifth year with the Gaels, entered the game at TD Stadium in the second quarter. From then he rushed for 117 yards in Queen's 50-31 loss to the Western Mustangs.

Needing 67 yards at the start of the game to pass Giffin, Granberg got the record on a 23-yard run to the Western one-yard line early in the fourth quarter. He scored from there on the next play.

With 333 yards for the season and 3,085 yards in his career, Granberg vaulted past the 3,015 yards amassed by Larry Mohr, the 1985 Hec Crighton award winner, and the 3,035 yards Mike Giffin gained in a four-year career that ended in 2008.

Saturday's performance was the 13th 100-yard game of Granberg's career at Queen's, fourth all-time behind Giffin (20), Mohr (17) and Ron Stewart (15).

The touchdown was Granberg's 28th for Queen's. With 168 points, lifetime, Granberg stands 8th in school history in regular-season scoring.

One of only two players in Queen's history to record a 1,000-yard season, Granberg rushed for 1,068 yards in 2011 and 966 yards in 2012, the second and fourth-best single-season totals all time.

In his time with the Gaels, Granberg has two games of more than 200 yards, 265 yards against Windsor and 240 yards against Waterloo, in back-to-back games, Oct. 8-15, 2011.
