Queen's moves up one spot in national football poll

Posted: October 22nd, 2013 @ 7:30pm

Queen's Golden Gaels moved up one spot to No. 4 in this week's ranking of Canadian university football teams, announced Tuesday by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

The Gaels, 7-1, traded places with Guelph after their 38-23 victory over the Gryphons at home Saturday.

For the fourth week in a row Western tops the national poll of University Football Reporters of Canada, with 20 of the 30 first-place votes. Laval, with the other 10 first-place votes, remains No. 2, one spot ahead of the country's only other remaining undefeated team, Canada West-leading Calgary.

Manitoba's 33-26 upset of No. 7-ranked Saskatchewan Friday night - in a game where the score was tied twice and there were five lead changes - played havoc with the bottom of the Top 10, as the Huskies fell three spots to No. 10.

Bishop's and McMaster each moved up a spot and after a two-week absence, Manitoba, a team that has neither won nor lost two games in a row all season, returned to the national list at No. 9.

For the eighth time in nine weeks, the top 10 is without a team from the Atlantic conference.

Playoffs begin Saturday in Ontario with two quarter-final games, while this will be the final weekend of the regular schedule in the other three conferences.

This week's Top 10, with previous rank, record, number of points in balloting, last week's result and next opponent:

1. Western (1), 8-0, 290 points, beat York 50-10; next: conference semifinal, opponent TBA, Nov. 2

2. Laval (2), 7-0, 279 points, beat Sherbrooke 38-3; next: Saturday, at No. 6 Montreal.

3. Calgary (3), 7-0, 232 points, beat Regina 46-27; next: Friday, vs. British Columbia.

4. Queen's (5), 7-1, 211 points, beat No. 4 Guelph 38-23; next: conference semifinal, opponent TBA, Nov. 2.

5. Guelph (4), 7-1, 173 points, lost 38-23 to No. 5 Queen's; next: Saturday, conference quarter-final vs. Windsor.

6. Montreal (6), 5-2, 154 points, beat McGill 28-3; next: Saturday vs. No. 2 Laval.
