Gaels will host Guelph in OUA football semifinal

Posted: October 27th, 2013 @ 12:15am

Queen's Golden Gaels will host the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon in an Ontario University Athletics football semifinal match at Richardson Stadium.

The semifinal opponents were set Saturday night after the Gryphons defeated the Windsor Lancers 31-21. Earlier, the McMaster Marauders whipped the Ottawa Gee-Gees 41-7. The outcomes mean the Marauders will face the No. 1-ranked Western Mustangs in the other conference semifinal next Saturday night.

Playing in Guelph, the home team took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Windsor, which lost to the Gryphons by one point in a Week 2 regular-season contest, rallied to cut the deficit to 17-14 by halftime.

James Ingram, who had just nine receptions in the regular year, caught a 37-yard Jazz Lindsey touchdown pass early in the third quarter to restore the Guelph lead to 10 points. Windsor got as close as five points late in the period, when Austin Kennedy capped a four-play, 90-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Whitfield, but that was as close as the Lancers would get, despite one late-game threat.

Trailing by 10 points Windsor had the ball on the Guelph seven-yard line with a little less than three minutes to play when the Lancers' luck evaporated. A holding penalty negated a touchdown pass, then Kennedy hit a goal post with a pass and a man open in the end zone. Then Dan Cerino's field-goal attempt was blocked.

The Lancers' defence held and though Windsor got the ball back with about a minute and a half to play, but they could not gain first down.

Guelph tailback Rob Farquharson, held to just 49 yards rushing by Queen's one week ago, carried the ball 30 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. Lindsey completed 18 of 29 passes for 247 yards. Kennedy was 20-for-37 for 255 yards on a night when the Lancers would gain just 65 yards on the ground. Each quarterback threw for one touchdown and one interception.

At Hamilton, Marauders quarterback Marshall Ferguson scored one touchdown and he threw for two others as McMaster won easily. One of them was a 27-yard scoring play to former Frontenac Secondary School teammate Ben O'Connor early in the fourth quarter.

The Marauders defence was stellar, allowing Ottawa just 184 yards of total offence - only 30 yards along the ground - while they intercepted two passes - one returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by Steven Ventresca. The Marauders sacked Gee-Gees quarterback Aaron Colbon five times and Jeremy Kyel recovered a fumble for a touchdown early in the third quarter, a pivotal play in that it stretched McMaster's lead to 24-5.

Wayne Moore had a career-best 140-yard rushing day for McMaster, in the absence of injured running back Kasean Davis-Reynolds. Ferguson finished 17-for-31 for 200 yards, with two interceptions.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Filson, another Frontenac grad, was 2-for-3 mopping up for McMaster, while Bayridge Secondary School alumnus Lewis Ward accounted for the only points scored by Ottawa's offence, a 28-yard field goal in the final minute of the first half.
