Shannon Walsh a finalist for national volleyball award

Posted: February 20th, 2014 @ 1:40am

Shannon Walsh of the Queen's Golden Gaels has been named East division winner of the Award of Merit for Ontario University Athletics women's volleyball.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and community service.

A Sydenham High School grad from Perth Road, Walsh was a libero in her first four varsity seasons before becoming a setter this year. In 16 matches, she had 125 assists and 50 digs for the Gaels, who finished the season 10-9.

In addition to her performance on the court, Walsh maintained a high academic average and, according to a release from the OUA, received glowing reviews in her practice teaching evaluations as she worked toward her Bachelor of Education degree.

In the community, Walsh coached several teams and worked at camps in both volleyball and track and field. She is co-president of the Varsity Leadership Council at Queen's, where she is a leader in anti-hazing pursuits.

Walsh will be the conference's nominee for the Therese Quigley award, which will be presented at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship Feb. 28 in Regina. Natalie Gray of Queen's won the national award in 2012.
