Kings welcome return of sharpshooter Josh Smith

Posted: April 28th, 2014 @ 3:30pm

Josh Smith, who tied for the team lead in goals with 32 last season, is among six players who have signed to play lacrosse for the Kingston Kings this summer.

Smith, an engineering student at Queen's University, joined the Kings last season from Innisfil. In his first season in Kingston, Smith, 20, tied for second in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League in goals. His 52 points (in 16 games) was ninth best in the province.
"Josh is a silent leader who leads by example," coach Andrew MacKay says. "He's a scoring threat anywhere in the offensive end and is also a skilled draw man and defensive/transition player."

The others signed to cards are returning players Nick Silva, Colin Hall, Robbie Sullivan and twin brothers Eric and Liam Brick. They bring to 10 the number of players signed for the coming campaign.

Sullivan, 20, a graduate of Holy Cross Secondary School and a student at the University of Guelph, will be starting his final season with the Kings. With 42 games played he is third, all-time, among active players.
"Robbie is the ultimate team guy," MacKay said. "He provides a positive attitude in all situations, games and practices. Robbie is another defensive player who can play a transition role and is all over loose balls."

The Brick brothers, 16, will be entering their rookie campaigns with the Kings. Students at La Salle Secondary School, they are both graduates of the Kingston Krossfire minor program.

"Eric and Liam are two natural athletes who are quick learners," McKay said. "They will provide speed in transition and though they will begin as defensive/transition players, they will evolve into exceptional two-way lacrosse players."
Silva, a Sydenham High School student from Verona, is beginning his second season with the Kings. A fearless competitor, he showed great improvement over the course of last season and worked his way into the lineup for all three playoff games.

Hall, another Holy Cross grad who now attends the University of Ottawa, is beginning his third junior campaign.

"Colin provides size out the back door and will be a veteran defender this season, able to help young players to learn the system."

The Kings move to Centre 70 for practice Monday night at 8:30. They'll play a home-and-home exhibition series with the Gloucester Griffins this weekend, with a game Friday night, 8 p.m., at Centre 70 and the return match Saturday afternoon, 3 o'clock, in Ottawa.

League play for the Kings begins Thursday, May 8, in Cornwall.
