Frontenacs 50th

Posted: March 7th, 2013 @ 10:17am

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:

Fifty years ago today, Thursday, March 7, 1963

Red Ouellette has been the biggest surprise for the Kingston Frontenacs this year, Allan Dickie writes in the Kingston Whig-Standard, in an analysis of the forward line of Ouellette, Jeannot Gilbert and Don Blackburn, which has produced more than 100 goals this EPHL season.

"Gilbert wasn't expected to show so well in his first year as a pro. Blackburn, an excellent skater and one of the league's better bodycheckers, never had been known as a scorer until this year," Dickie wrote. "(Ouellette) always was a top-rate scorer but he never had been noted for his checking ability and aggressiveness. This year he's retained his scoring touch and improved his checking tremendously. He's been possibly Kingston's most consistent forward over the course of the season."

Cliff Pennington, meanwhile, is approaching a league record for points in consecutive games. Pennington has registered at least one point in each of his last 17 games. The record is 23 straight games, set by Kingston's Orv Tessier in 1959-60. Pennington will be seeking to extend his string Saturday night at home against St. Louis and Sunday in Sudbury.

* Hull-Ottawa Canadiens coach Billy Carter tells the Ottawa Citizen he believes St. Louis will be a difficult opponent tomorrow night. The last-place Braves have won their last three games and are now only 11 points out of third place with 14 games remaining.

Carter, whose team has three players with the parent Montreal Canadiens, isn't bothered by his depleted lineup. "We have Cesare Maniago," he said. "Cesare just seems to be at his best when the going is roughest." Maniago, at 6-2 the tallest goalie in pro hockey, has a 2.36 goals-against average.
