Sydenham to face Almonte in EOSSAA football final Friday

Posted: November 11th, 2014 @ 10:23pm

Two undefeated football teams will meet Friday for the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior AA football title at Caraco Field.

Sydenham Golden Eagles, the Kingston Area champions, will host the Almonte Thunderbolts, champions of the Lanark-Renfrew league, in a 1 o'clock game.

At stake is a berth in the National Capital AA final.

Sydenham is 8-0 after its 31-28 victory over Brockville in an eastern Ontario semifinal match last Friday; Almonte is 7-0 after defeating Arnprior 35-16 in Friday's other semifinal, in games that were almost mirror images of each other.

At Sydenham, the Eagles led 21-0 by early in the second quarter and 24-6 at halftime and withstood a furious fourth-quarter comeback to claim the three-point victory.

Almonte, meanwhile, trailed 16-0 at halftime and staged a remarkable second-half rally, one built on the five-touchdown performance by running back Zack Kealey.

Sydenham last was this far along the playoff trail in 2010, when the Eagles defeated St. Peter of Ottawa at Minto Field to gain a berth in the National Capital Bowl game in Toronto, where they lost in overtime to Peterborough Crestwood.

Almonte won five of its league's first seven championships of the 21st century, and the Thunderbolts won again in 2013.
