Queen's soccer teams both on a roll

Posted: September 21st, 2015 @ 8:47pm

Queen’s Golden Gaels are proving to be a formidable foe on the road this year, and the latest team to discover that firsthand is the Ryerson Rams.

The Rams, the No. 2-ranked men’s soccer team in Canada going into the game, were beaten 4-1 by the Gaels Sunday afternoon. It was the first loss in eight games for Ryerson, which succumbed after the Gaels scored three goals in a span of six minutes midway through the second half.

For Queen’s, undefeated on the road this year (3-0-1), the win was their third in a row, and it leaves the Gaels in fourth place in the East division of Ontario University Athletics, 3-1-2 overall, five points behind third-place Toronto, which has played two more games.

The Gaels spotted Ryerson an early lead, when Raheem Rose of the Rams scored in the fifth minute of the game. Oliver Coren scored for Queen’s before the first half ended, and then the Gaels erupted 10 minutes into the second half.

Jacob Schroeter ignited the rally, scoring his team-best fourth goal of the season. Before the flurry was finished, Queen’s also had goals from Patrick van Belleghem and Tonko Bacelic as the Gaels took control of the match.

The Queen’s defence was superb, allowing Ryerson, the highest scoring team in the East division with 22 goals in its first seven games, just four shots on goal. Kingston Collegiate grad Taylor Reynolds stopped all but one of them to post the goalkeeping victory.

Saturday, a late goal from Conor Hannigan lifted Queen’s to a 2-1 victory over the Varsity Blues, who lost for just the second time this season.

As in Sunday’s game, Queen’s surrendered an early goal, this one by Nirun Sivananathan before three minutes had been played, to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. It took just eight minutes for Schroeter to tie the game and the score stayed that way until late in the second half.

Hannigan’s goal came in the game’s 81st minute, not long after he received a yellow card.

In the defensive struggle, Kyle Lanzinger was the winning goalkeeper, making just one save. Toronto’s Rab Bruce-Lockhart didn’t stop either of only two shots the Gaels managed to take on his goal.

Queen’s women also came home from Toronto with a pair of victories, as goalkeeper Madison Tyrell posted back-to-back shutouts, 3-0 over Ryerson Sunday and 1-0 over U of T Saturday.

Sunday’s win was the third in a row for the Gaels, who began the season without a victory from their first four games.

It took less than two minutes for rookie forward Jenny Wolever to score Queen’s first goal against Ryerson. A goal by Laura Callender gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at halftime and Wolever scored her second goal of the game—and team-best fourth of the year—in the 55th minute to put the contest away.

Tyrell made six saves for the shutout, after having to make just one to blank Toronto the day before. Queen’s has not allowed a goal in its last four games, a shutout streak of 434 minutes dating to the 16th minute of the Gaels’ game with Toronto at home Sept. 5.

In the rematch with the Blues Saturday, Queen’s handed Toronto just its second loss in seven games this season when Jessie de Boer, after receiving a pass from Brittany Almeida, scored on her own rebound in the game’s 34th minute.

De Boer had three cracks at the net: her first shot was blocked, her second shot hit the crossbar but when the ball came back to her a second time, she finally put it behind Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci.

Unbeaten in its last five games and now 3-1-3, with 12 points Queen’s is fifth in the East division, just one point behind Laurentian and Nipissing, who are tied for third.

Both the Queen’s men and women resume play Saturday afternoon at Miklas-McCarney Field, where they will host Ontario Tech.
