Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: April 8th, 2013 @ 12:58pm

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Friday, April 8, 1977

Only the magic of rookie goaltender Jay O'Connor saves the Ottawa 67's from embarrassment as they are defeated 5-2 by the Kingston Canadians before a Memorial Centre crowd of 4,344. The win enables the Canadians to tie their eight-point semifinal 2-2.

The Canadians pumped 46 shots on O'Connor, who nonetheless kept his team in the game, trailing just 3-2 with 12 minutes to play before power-play goals by Ken Linseman and Tony McKegney finally sealed the outcome.

Linseman finished the game with a goal and three assists while McKegney ended with two goals. Mike Simurda and Brian Crombeen also scored for Kingston. Warren Holmes and Dave MacQueen scored for the 67's, who mustered only 21 shots at Kingston goalie Rick Nickelchok.
