Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: April 17th, 2013 @ 3:02pm

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Sunday, April 17, 1977

With a lineup riddled by injuries and a suspension, the Kingston Canadians stun the Ottawa 67's 5-3 at the Memorial Centre to take a 7-5 lead in their eight-point semifinal series.

Before a crowd of 3,535 the Canadians compensated for the loss of Mike Crombeen and Ken Linseman with a strong checking display, "as the Canadians' defence continued to make life miserable for the normally high-scoring Ottawa forwards," Art Wright wrote in the Whig-Standard.

Daryl Benjamin's second goal of the game, into an empty net with seven seconds to play, clinched the win. Kingston's other goals came from Rob Plumb, Brian Sproxton and Tom Bailey.

Ex-Canadian Ron Davidson, Dave MacQueen and defenceman Jim Kirkpatrick scored for Ottawa, which outshot Kingston 31-27.

After Davidson's goal early in the third period brought Ottawa back to within 4-3, Kingston goaltender Rick Nickelchok robbed Bob Smith from just outside the crease and then he made what Wright described as a spectacular save on Doug Wilson's hard shot from the point to keep his team in front.

* Canadians management received word before the game that Linseman and Ottawa's Jeff Geiger would each be suspended for four games for their scrap in Game 3. They've already sat out three games, and will be available if the series goes to an eighth game Wednesday in Kingston.
