Kingston-area athletes qualify for OFSAA track finals

All five Kingston runners competing in the 1,500 metres made it through the qualifying heats Thursday and into their respective finals Friday on the first day of the 64th Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and and field meet in Oshawa.
Foremost among them was Regiopolis Notre Dame's Branna MacDougall, who won her heat and posted the second-fastest time in midget girls division, 4 minutes 54.75 seconds.
Heather Jaros of La Salle, at 4:49.01, was sixth among junior girls; Nicole Armstrong of Sydenham had the sixth-best time in senior girls division, 4:44.41; Ben Workman of Kingston was seventh among junior boys in a season-best 4:09.38 and his KC teammate, Cameron Linscott, was 12th among midget boys at 4:21.49.
Sydenham's Wade Embury, a bronze medalist in senior boys 400 metres a year ago, had the best time in the heats this year, 48.70 seconds. He'll take a five-meet winning streak into Friday's final.
Jay Dearborn of Sydenham had the best finish among local competitors in yesterday's field event finals. On his final attempt he threw the spear 51.25 metres, by 2.28 metres his best throw of the competition, to finish fifth in senior boys javelin.
The only other local athlete to make the final rounds in a field event was Napanee's Leah Hill, who finished eighth in junior girls shot put.
Competition in the three-day meet resumes today.

Nicole Armstrong, Sydenham
Ran senior girls 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 44.41 seconds, finished third in the slow heat and qualified for Friday's final. Her time was sixth overall.
Kenya Costa-Dookhan, Holy Cross
Had a best attempt of 4.74 metres and finished 18th in senior girls long jump.
Ben Cross, Frontenac
Had a best attempt of 5.79 metres and finished 16th in junior boys long jump.
Jay Dearborn, Sydenham
Had a best attempt of 51.25 metres and finished fifth in senior boys javelin.
Wade Embury, Sydenham
Won the fast heat in senior boys 400 metres in 48.70 seconds and qualified for Friday's final. His time was first overall.
Cariston Fawcett, Holy Cross
Had a best attempt of 31.10 metres and finished 10th in senior girls discus.
Hana Gazdik, Frontenac
Had a best attempt of 9.41 metres, a season best, and finished 13th in junior girls shot put.
Leah Hill, Napanee
Had a best attempt of 9.63 metres and finished eighth in junior girls shot put.
Heather Jaros, La Salle
Ran junior girls 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 49.01 seconds, finished third in the fast heat and qualified for Friday's final. Her time was sixth overall.
Devin Leblanc, Holy Cross
Ran midget boys 400 metres in 55.98 seconds, finished seventh in the slow heat and did not qualify for the final. His time was 22nd overall.
Cameron Linscott, Kingston
Ran midget boys 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 21.49 seconds, finished fifth in the fast heat and qualified for Friday's final. His time was 12th overall.
Branna MacDougall, Regiopolis Notre Dame
Won the slow heat in midget girls 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 54.75 seconds and qualified for Friday's final. Her time was second overall.
Brayden Raymond, Holy Cross
Had a best attempt of 5.82 metres, a season best, and finished 11th in junior boys long jump.
Ben Trickey, Sydenham
Ran senior boys 400 metres in 51.26 seconds, finished fifth in the slow heat and did not qualify for the final. His time was 14th overall.
Ben Workman, Kingston
Ran junior boys 1,500 metres in 4 minutes 9.38 seconds, finished fourth in the fast heat and qualified for Friday's final. His time was seventh overall.
Relays
Prince Edward junior boys
Cole Norton, Lucas Clarke, Grayson St. Pierre and Josh Stechnicki ran their heat in 46.15 seconds, finished sixth in the second-fastest heat and did not qualify for the final. Their time was 16th overall.
Sydenham senior girls
Rachel Nelles, Alicia McMullen, Amanda Tibbutt and Emelyn Fauvel ran their heat in 52.27 seconds, finished seventh in the fast heat and did not qualify for the final. Their time was 17th overall.
