Finalists named for Kiwanis athlete-of-the-year award

Posted: January 14th, 2015 @ 8:13pm

Augusta and Austin James, the golf-playing siblings from Bath, are among eight local athletes who are finalists for the Kiwanis Club’s amateur athlete-of-the-year award.

Austin James, the Canadian junior boys champion, and his older sister, Augusta, the Canadian women’s amateur champion, were selected, along with six others, by a committee of Kiwanians and local sports media.

Also nominated are:

• Lacrosse player Zach Masterson;

• Basketball players Lacey Knox of St. Lawrence College and Jenny Wright of the Queen’s Golden Gaels;

• Distance runners Branna MacDougall and Cameron Linscott;

• Marshall Ferguson, quarterback of the Yates Cup and Mitchell Bowl champion McMaster Marauders.

The Kiwanis Club will also be honouring builders Al Baker, Pat Farrell, Garry McColman and Mark McKenna, and three championship teams: the National Capital Bowl-champion Sydenham Golden Eagles senior football team, the OFSAA-champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers boys volleyball team and the Kingston Elite senior co-ed cheer team.

The 35th winner of the Gus Marker Trophy will be announced Feb. 5 at a banquet at the Ambassador Hotel.
