Ex-Gael Matt Mullins named to Pan Am Games rugby team

Posted: July 6th, 2015 @ 2:40pm

Former Queen’s University rugby player Matt Mullins has been named to the Canadian team for the men’s sevens tournament at the Pan American Games in Toronto.

Mullins and Phil Mack Saturday were selected to replace Pat Kay and Pat Parfrey.

The tournament will be Mullins’ national-team debut.

A native of Belleville, Mullins was named a tournament all-star at the national intercollegiate sevens championship in 2013, the year he helped Queen’s win the Ontario university title.

The defending Pan Am Games champion, Canada is in a pool this time with Argentina, the 2011 silver medalist, Brazil and Guyana. The eight-team tournament will be contested at Exhibition Stadium, where the Canadians will play their first game Saturday morning against Guyana.

(In case you’re wondering, it’s really BMO Stadium, but the venue is temporarily renamed because it’s part of CIBC Pan Am Park on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition).
